The Honeymoon Sand Dollar

I have long had a fascination with all objects that come from the water. From rocks and coral to intricate shells and starfish. My all time favorite treasure that comes from the sea though is the stunning, delicately detailed and lacy sand dollar. Its sun-bleached creamy color, it's nearly flat shape, its incredibly beautifully oval shaped holes all topped with a beautiful star make it an absolute miracle of art and engineering. I remember marveling at one that i stumbled upon at the beach as a little girl, how did they come to be, how did a star get placed on each one, how is each one strikingly similar regardless of the size? I started to look for them every time I went to a beach, though I mostly only found broken pieces, sand dollars were an absolute delight and mystery.  To me, the mere existence of the sand dollar is proof that everything on earth is preciously made, not just for our admiration, but for our sheer and utter awe. 

When we were on our honeymoon in turks and caicos 25 years ago, I told my husband how much I loved san dollars, and the ones in turks were bleached so white from the sun, they were almost otherwordly. We found dozens of them on the beach but all of them were broken.  I collected a few pieces but we always on the hunt for at least one unbroken sand dollar.  On one of our last days there, my husband was out snorkeling and gone for a long time. When he finally came in, he arms and pockets full of completely whole and perfect sand dollars!! He has found a sand bar way out in the ocean that was completely dry and full of sand dollars bleaching in the sun. he called it sand dollar island and this little collection was the most romantic thing he'd ever done for me, the most special and beautiful wedding gift. 

Sand Dollars have long been symbols of abundance, rebirth, renewal and transformation. All beautiful symbols of the beginning of anything....whether it's a marriage, a new chapter, a new job or as we head into our warmer months, a new season.  Much like my search for san dollars on my honeymoon, i spent years trying to find a pendant. I finally found a vintage one and have been wearing it every summer since.
